The House I Wil Never See Again

Dawn, somewhere between five and six. Exhaustion from a sleepless night on the train. Dew clinging to my grandmother's garden. Two dogs spinning with excitement around their kennels. My brother and I were barely awake, yet too excited to know what to do with ourselves. Play with the dogs? Dig out the toys from the attic that we hadn't seen all year? Jump on our bikes and ride to the lake?

All the activities of the day seemed veiled by a sleepy haze and a strange sense of unreality.
